Blue KC rallies for food access, security

2022 AMAIZING SWEET CORN GLEAN-A-THON & FESTIVAL

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City rallies for food access, security

As a sponsor of the 2022 Amaizing Sweet Corn Glean-A-Thon & Festival, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is rallying its employees and local organizations to solve issues around food security

As a healthcare insurance provider, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City puts its money – and its muscle – where its mouth is. This year, Blue KC joined forces with After the Harvest as a sponsor and participating team of the 2022 Amaizing Sweet Corn Glean-A-Thon.

Blue KC’s support of After the Harvest is in alignment with its new 2018 initiative, Well Stocked, in which the company partners with local organizations to solve issues around food access and food security in Kansas City.

“We wanted to focus on one key need, and knowing that food access and food security affects children, families, and seniors across all parts of the Kansas City metro, we decided food would be our focus,” said Macaela Stephenson, Blue KC Director of Community Relations and Investment. “We loved After the Harvest’s work rescuing fresh food and getting it to pantries and directly into the hands of people who need it.”

Today, BlueKC partners with and funds more than 300 nonprofits in Kansas City, and its employees give directly to their favorite organizations through volunteer work, payroll deduction, or both. Blue KC employees are given a paid day off every year to volunteer, and in 2021, employees raised roughly $300,000 for local nonprofits.

“We have a real interest in food security, but we also focus on mental health and health equity in Kansas City,” Stephenson said. “We’re very focused on the health of our community and making sure that people have access to the care and information they need to live happier, healthier lives.”
